A Weekend in Doboj: Ozren, Banja Vrućica, and Hajdučke Vode
Doboj itself is compact enough to explore in a day, but a car opens up a very different side of the area: forests, easy walks, animals, thermal pools, and mountain views.
The three routes below offer something for different kinds of weekends, from meeting animals and hiking on Ozren to an easy forest walk and a few hours of wellness.
You will need a car to reach these places. Choose a route according to the weather, who you are travelling with, and how active you want the day to be.
Before You Head Out of Town
If this is your first visit, leave some time for Doboj too. Gradina Fortress, a walk through the centre, and lunch or coffee are enough for a relaxed introduction to the town.
Our One Day in Doboj itinerary covers the town itself, while the routes below are for exploring the surrounding area.
Route 1: Naša Maša, the Fallow Deer Farm, and Gostilj
This is our first choice for visitors who enjoy animals and nature. The three stops follow each other naturally along the same route, so there is no need to drive back and forth.
Naša Maša and the deer farm are especially good for families with children. Add the hike to Gostilj if you want a more active day.
Start at Naša Maša
Naša Maša is based at Paraghost Ozren, a paragliding club surrounded by nature. Its best-known residents are Maša and Ljubica, two rescued bears, but there are other animals too.
There is a restaurant with an outdoor terrace where you can stop for lunch, coffee, or a longer break. You can also ask the club about paragliding and activities on Ozren.
Use Waze for the final approach and search for "NAŠA MAŠA DOBOJ". Google Maps may take you along the wrong route. You can also check @nasha_masha_doboj on Instagram or the Naša Maša Facebook page for the latest arrival information.
Check current opening hours before setting off, especially outside the main season.

Continue to the Fallow Deer Farm
The fallow deer farm is a separate location, about four kilometres from Naša Maša and less than ten minutes away by car.
The farm has a herd of roughly forty fallow deer. Visitors can enter their open area, get close to them, and feed them. You may also see a few other animals, including rabbits.
There is no restaurant or cafe at the farm, so plan your food stop at Naša Maša. Around half an hour is usually enough for the visit.
The farm is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 and admission is around BAM 6. Check the latest information before visiting, and only feed the animals with food approved or provided by the hosts.

Hike to the Top of Gostilj
From the deer farm, you can continue towards Gostilj, one of the best-known peaks on Ozren and a launch site for paragliders.
You can leave the car at the farm or drive roughly 300 metres closer to the usual starting point. From there, the marked path to the top is about 2.4 kilometres long. Most visitors in reasonable shape will need around 45 minutes for the climb.
The route gains approximately 220 metres in elevation and is moderately demanding, but it has no particularly steep sections. The path is clearly marked, Google Maps can help with orientation, and a guide is not normally needed.

- Ordinary trainers are sufficient when the path is dry.
- Avoid the hike after rain, when parts of the trail may be muddy and slippery.
- On very hot days, go earlier or choose another activity because there is little shade at the top.
- Bring water and take the climb at an easy pace if you are not used to hiking.

The Iva Grass Picking Tradition
Gostilj is also the centre of one of Ozren's most important living traditions. Every year on 11 September, the feast of the Beheading of St John the Baptist, people from the surrounding villages climb the mountain to pick iva grass.
After the picking, groups gather on Gostilj in traditional Ozren costumes, with local music, singing, and dancing. Orthodox priests later bless the gathered iva. The plant is traditionally prepared as tea, steeped in rakija, or mixed with honey.
In 2018, the Picking of Iva Grass on Ozren Mountain was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. UNESCO highlights the tradition not only for its roots in folk medicine, but also for bringing the community together and preserving Ozren's costumes, songs, and dances.

If hiking is not for you, Goransko Lake is an easier way to spend time outdoors near Doboj. In summer, people come to swim, picnic, barbecue, play beach volleyball, or take a short walk through the surrounding forest.
There is a large parking area before the lake and a toilet in the central part of the complex, next to the restaurant. Food outlets generally operate during summer, but their opening hours are seasonal.
Swimming is possible in summer, although this is a natural outdoor lake and algae may be present. Decide based on the conditions you find on the day.
A forest path connects the lake with Preslica, but there is little to see there apart from the monument. The former picnic facilities are now neglected.

Route 2: Terme Ozren and Ozren Monastery
Terme Ozren and the monastery lie in a different direction from Gostilj and work well as a separate outing.
Terme Ozren are roughly a 30-minute drive from Doboj and offer indoor and outdoor pools with regular and thermal water. The monastery is about another 15 minutes away.

Ozren Monastery, dedicated to St Nicholas, is a peaceful place surrounded by open grassy areas. Around half an hour is normally enough to see the monastery itself.
There is parking beside the road, the approach is good, and Google Maps leads to the correct entrance. Large grassy areas around the monastery make it pleasant for families and for a quiet picnic.
Dress respectfully when entering the monastery: avoid bare shoulders, very short skirts, and similar clothing. Follow any instructions about photography or access that you find on site.

Banja Vrućica and Hajdučke Vode work well as a single day trip. They are around half an hour apart, and you can visit them in either order.
Choose this route if you prefer marked forest walks, restaurants, and the option of adding a few hours of wellness.
Walking at Banja Vrućica
Banja Vrućica is a complex of several hotels and restaurants set in landscaped natural surroundings. Its short, clearly marked forest routes include the Life Trail, Cardio Trail, Love Trail, and Challenge Trail.
These are not demanding mountain hikes. Depending on the route and your pace, a walk can last from half an hour to about an hour. There are benches along the way and plenty of free parking within the complex.
The wellness facilities can also be used without staying at one of the hotels. Check current day-pass conditions and prices directly with the complex before visiting.

Forest, Food, and Wellness at Hajdučke Vode
Hajdučke Vode sit in a wooded mountain setting with marked walking routes. One maintained path leads to the spring after which the area was named.
The Hajdučka Vatra restaurant, next to the hotel, is a convenient place for lunch and serves a broad selection of hearty local dishes.
The spa is also open to day visitors. A three-hour visit including the pool, sauna, and relaxation area costs around BAM 20 per person. Check the current price and availability before setting off.

Walk to the Hajdučke Vode Spring
If you would rather stay outdoors, follow the marked path from the main complex to the nearby spring. It is an easy addition to a meal or a short forest walk.

Our Recommendation
For a first visit, start with Naša Maša and the fallow deer farm, then continue to Gostilj if you feel like hiking.
The following day, choose between the pools and monastery on Ozren or the combination of Banja Vrućica and Hajdučke Vode.
The advantage of staying in Doboj is that you can return to the town each evening, have dinner in the centre, and choose the next day's route according to the weather.
